Submitted At its Annual General Meeting, the Battlefords Scuba Community reported a busy year to its members. And the members saw evidence of some of the activity as the entries in the Underwater Photography Contest were on display.

Here is a rundown of some of the hockey action involving local teams on the weekend. SPHL In senior action the Meota Combines opened their season at the North Battleford Civic Centre with an 8-4 drubbing of the Glaslyn North Stars.

The Humboldt Broncos’ winning streak came to an end, but after the weekend the team still sat on top of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League standings.

The 106th Grey Cup was won by the Calgary special teams. The offences and defences for the Stampeders and the Redblacks were about equal but the Stampeder special teams made the big plays.

The Battlefords North Stars got an important win over their division rivals Saturday, beating the Kindersley Klippers at home 4-2. It was a tough contest, as always against their rivals.

As usual the Commissioner’s State of the League Address on Friday of Grey Cup week was a mixture of general commentary and specific facts about the CFL. I find the facts portion more interesting.

The Battlefords North Stars dropped a heartbreaker on the road to Nipawin Hawks Friday night. The Hawks beat the Stars 2-1 in a shootout.

It was Media Day Thursday in the lead up to the Grey Cup. The RedBlacks and Stampeders gathered in the morning and afternoon respectively for interviews.

It’s the end of a tremendous football season for the John Paul II Collegiate Crusaders. They made it all the way to provincial semifinals this year before losing 23-15 to Humboldt.

On a six-game winning streak, the Humboldt Broncos continue to top the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League standings.
