A new year begins, and so do many searches into the past. The Yorkton branch of the Saskatchewan Genealogy Society invites you to their first meeting of 2014 on Tuesday, January 14 at 7:00 p.m. at the Western Development Museum.

Welcome to Week LXXXV of 'Fishing Parkland Shorelines'. Like most of us I am a novice fisherman, loving to fish, but far from an expert.

It's a new year, and as we are all apt to do at this time of year, we look ahead to what 2014 might bring. In Yorkton it is likely we will see a continuation of expansion, although to what extent, is an unknown.

So what kind of year should we hope for in 2014? Well, how about one almost identical to the year we had in 2013 - one of the best years that Saskatchewan (and especially, rural Saskatchewan) has ever had.

I wished him a Merry Christmas, just before Christmas. "Same to you," he said, but his words felt flat. Then, rather than carrying on, he paused. A strapping young man whose name I don't even know. A man with something on his mind.

View from the Cheap Seats is kind of an extension of the newsroom. Whenever our three regular reporters, Calvin Daniels, Thom Barker and Randy Brenzen are in the building together, it is frequently a site of heated debate.

As I wrote last week, there was not a lot of consensus in the scientific world in 2013 as to what the most important stories were. Of course, we all have our personal biases.

It is somewhat of a tradition in journalism to look back on the previous year, but not just at what made news, but to what we may have paid too much and/or too little attention.
