Team Canada won the 2016 Spengler Cup, beating HC Lugano of Switzerland 5-2 in the final. Canada finished the round robin with a 1-1 record, and then won the games in the quarterfinal and the semifinal rounds.

After a few years of almost nonexistent snow, it is safe to say we have a surplus for the rest of the winter.

For much of the past year, there has been speculation on what the government means when it talks about 鈥渢ransformational change,鈥� and how it would impact health-care, education, government spending and other aspects provincial operations.

It鈥檚 going to be a special year for our country. Canada will celebrate its 150th birthday in 2017. The big celebrations, obviously, will come on Canada Day on July 1, when we can look forward to festivities from coast to coast.

A couple of weeks ago, I did something interesting that I don鈥檛 often get to do as a reporter. I set aside my pen, pad and camera and instead of being the observer of a phenomenon taking place in the city, I became a participant.

Winter has come upon us in our region in full force and we're likely only about halfway through it. I personally find the lead up to Christmas the easiest part of winter because of the anticipation and prepping of all things festive and cozy.

The New England Patriots hammered the New York Jets 41-3 in a one-sided game just before Christmas. The Pats were in control of the game from start to finish. The only points that the Patriots gave up was a Jets鈥� field goal.
