CARLYLE — The man who was arrested in connection with a homicide in Estevan on May 10 has been officially charged with second-degree murder.
Evan Dennis Isbister, age 36, appeared by phone in Carlyle Provincial Court on May 14. At that time, Crown prosecutor Travis Avery said Isbister would be charged with second-degree murder; previously the charge was not particularized and had just stated murder.
Isbister's attorney, Aleida Oberholzer, said she just received the file and is awaiting disclosure.
Oberholzer did not object to the second-degree murder charge.
Isbister was remanded into custody and will make his next appearance by video or phone on June 9 in Estevan Provincial Court.
Background: In a May 11 news release, the Estevan Police Service said it was investigating a sudden death that has been deemed a homicide.
The EPS says that at approximately 8:46 p.m. on May 10, officers were dispatched to a residence in the 1400-block of First Street. The caller reported an assault was taking place.
When the EPS arrived, they located three men in the residence. The EPS said two were arrested without incident and transported to the police station. Estevan EMS responded to the scene to care for the victim, 60-year-old Todd Isbister, and transported him to St. Joseph’s Hospital for treatment. He died from his injuries a short time later.
One of the arrested men was cleared of any wrongdoing and was subsequently released from custody. The other man arrested was Evan Isbister.
The victim and accused were known to each other and next of kin have been notified of the death.
Detectives with the EPS Criminal Investigations Division have been assigned to lead the investigation and will be supported by the EPS Forensic Identification Unit.
