In the footsteps of Jane Jacobs; walking, talking and exploring together

Saskatoon will hold a series of free, guided walking tours May 2-4 to help participants meet their city, learn its history, while exploring important locations on foot.

SASKATOON - Experience the beauty of your city on foot, by joining Jane’s Walk.

Jane Jacobs was a writer (1916-2006), urbanist and activist who championed the voices of everyday people in the neighborhood planning and city-building.

The annual Jane’s Walk takes place the first weekend in May, close to Jacobs’ birthday, which falls on May 4.

Saskatoon’s Jane’s Walk event will run from May 2 to 4 and include 20 free, live guided walks throughout the city. Volunteer leaders have returned this year along with a number of new walk leaders, all who will bring participants a unique perspective on Saskatoon.

Her first book, The Death and Life of Great American Cities, released in 1961, challenged the ideas of modernist city planning and offered a new vision of diverse cities made for, and by the people who live in them.

Jane’s Walk was founded in 2006 as a living, walking commemoration of Jacobs and her legacy. Ten years later, in 2016, there were more than 1,000 Jane’s Walks that took place in 212 cities around the world, spanning 36 countries and 6 continents.

A partial list of the 16th Anniversary Jane’s Walks in Saskatoon includes:

  • Exploring the Natural and Cultural History of Beaver Creek Conservation Area
  • Dark Skies: Their Beauty and Necessity (Thurs. May 1 at  9:30 p.m.)
  • Gravesites of Former Downtown Grocery Stores, Food Deserts and Hope for the Future
