SASKATOON — An estimated $125,000 worth of property was lost in the structure fire that claimed the life of the occupant on June 28 in the 600 block of Avenue N Â鶹ÊÓƵ, according to the Saskatoon Fire Department.

The fire investigator has concluded, after conducting a scene examination, that the fire started in the basement underneath the stairs.

The investigator has not yet determined the cause of the fire, and the SFD did not provide additional details. The structure was closed due to safety concerns resulting from fire and water damage.

It is still unknown why the occupant failed to evacuate at the time of the fire.

The fire was reported at 9:13 a.m. on June 28. Three fire engines, one rescue unit, a ladder truck and the battalion chief were dispatched, with the first crews arriving at 9:16 a.m.

Thick smoke was reported coming from the roof and was also visible inside the structure. The fire was brought under control at 9:43 a.m.

Firefighters, who conducted a search, located one person inside the structure and immediately removed the person. Unfortunately, the person later died.

This marks the second fatality in a structure fire this year in Saskatoon. The first fatal fire incident of 2025 occurred in the 2200 block of 20th Street West on Feb. 16.

The SFD received the report of that fire from the Saskatoon Police Service at 3:08 a.m. and immediately dispatched three fire engines, one ladder truck, a rescue unit and the battalion chief.

The first crews arrived at 3:14 a.m. and reported heavy smoke coming from the main floor of the bungalow, with visible flames in the basement. The fire was brought under control at 4:28 a.m. One occupant was home at the time and was found deceased.
