REGINA – Nearly three decades after the death of 22-year-old Muriel Roxanne Demorest, the Regina Police Service (RPS) has officially reclassified her case as a homicide – finally providing long-awaited answers to her grieving family.

Demorest was found deceased in the alley in the 1200 block of King Street in 1996. Initially, her death was deemed accidental, with investigators believing she suffered fatal injuries while changing a vehicle tire. But in recent years, new witness statements prompted a fresh examination of the case.

On March 27, after a thorough review by the RPS Cold Case Unit and the Saskatchewan Coroners Service, authorities determined that Demorest’s death was the result of a deliberate act. Police now believe a suspect intentionally caused her death but since the individual’s recent passing, no charges can be laid. RPS say the suspect’s identity won’t be released.

Demorest’s family has been notified of the findings, say police.

Acting Chief Lorilee Davies praised RPS’s dedication to resolving historical cases, no matter how much time has passed. In this case it was 29 years.

“The Regina Police Service remains committed to seeking truth, no matter how much time has passed,” said Acting Chief Lorilee Davies. “As technology evolves and new information comes to light from witnesses, our investigators continue to review historical cases with fresh eyes and open minds.”

RPS reminds the public to bring forward any information that could lead to a break in an investigation – no matter how insignificant the detail might seem.

“The unwavering dedication of our investigators reflects our commitment to accountability and building trust with the community we serve,” said Davies. “We want the public to know that we will never stop pursuing answers.”
