REGINA — Recent incidents at events around the world are prompting local festivals to ensure security is a top priority.

Back in April, after a vehicle drove through the crowd.

On Monday, 65 people were injured in a Liverpool parade celebrating the soccer club's Premier League championship after a car plowed into the crowd.

In a recent interview with Â鶹ÊÓƵ, Don Young, executive director of the Cathedral Village Arts Festival (CVAF), said they added more security for the 2025 event.

”We probably ended up spending upwards of $8,000 on security.”

Along with security, the CVAF added concrete barriers to protect pedestrians.

As for other Regina events, Mosaic – A Festival of Culture isn’t ruling out an incident like a car ramming happening despite the event being held indoors.

“It’s always something on your mind,” said Terry Zwarych, chair of the Mosaic festival.

Zwarych said Mosaic holds monthly meetings with stakeholders, including the Regina Police Service (RPS) and Regina Fire, on executing safety.

“The fire department will lay out rules and regulations, but also inspect each pavilion to make sure exitways are clear.”

Even with preparation, Zwarych noted there’s no way to predict any threat to safety.

“It’s a dangerous situation if you walk across the street, for example, so you can’t protect against everything.”

Despite that, Zwarych raved about how safe Mosaic has been.

“In 2023, we had 125,000 visits, and there was not one police call or police incident pertaining to the festival.”

The RPS also emphasized the importance of creating public safety plans and mitigating risks to public safety.

In a statement to Â鶹ÊÓƵ, the RPS said,  “recent events have underlined the importance of this collaborative planning and the need to ensure the correct safety measures are in place.”

From these events, the RPS is working closely with community partners to review safety plans and make any adjustments if needed.
