REGINA — The City of Regina will begin its annual cankerworm spray program the week of May 26 in areas with high insect counts and where trees are most at risk of damage.

More than 4,500 trees are scheduled to be sprayed this year, based on assessments done in fall 2024 and spring 2025. Crews will use BTK, an organic product approved by Health Canada. This treatment effectively kills cankerworms but is harmless to pets, wildlife and humans.

Residents in designated spraying areas will receive a hand-delivered, printed notification that spraying will take place near their homes within 72 hours. If spraying can’t be completed within the 72-hour time frame, it will be rescheduled and a new notice will be delivered.

The notice will include tips to help residents prepare for spraying in their neighbourhoods, including:

  • Keeping family members and pets away from spray crews
  • Closing windows and doors
  • Moving cars off the street, if possible

The cankerworm spray program protects our trees and ensures that residents can continue to enjoy a healthy urban forest for years to come.
