This week we are talking orchids for a couple of reasons. One of my favourite people in the world recently passed. Among other things, she was an orchid addict and over her lifetime grew hundreds, if not thousands, of orchids.

Think quick! Name an industry that鈥檚 saw its fleet shrink by 37 per cent in five years, yet its primary production increased? Trucking? Faming? Beef? Potash? Uranium? Rail? Ocean-going shipping? Cucumbers? Ding ding ding! Times up.

Earlier this winter I watched as a record amount of January rain filled the swamp at the back of our property. With the ground still locked in a hard freeze, there weren鈥檛 a lot of places to hold this deluge.

Rain, rain, go away. Don鈥檛 come back for another day, or week; by the way, given the forecast, at least a couple more weeks would be great.

Psalm 30 says: 鈥淥 Lord, you turned my mourning into dancing; you removed my sackcloth and clothed me with joy that my heart may sing to you and not be silent. O Lord my God, I will give you thanks forever.

It鈥檚 a new year, a new decade, so lets share some thoughts on ways to become more sustainable 鈥� permaculture for example. It was in the 1970s that this term was coined and simply means permanent agriculture.

Dear Editor Thank you Victor Hult for your letter in the January 23 issue of the Battlefords News-Optimist (Taxes scarier than climate change). First of all, I will agree the carbon tax introduced by the federal government is ridiculous.

Jan. 29 is Bell鈥檚 Let鈥檚 Talk Day. It鈥檚 the day when one of the largest companies in Canada encourages the nation to speak about mental health. More and more companies, agencies and individuals are taking part every year. I hate it.
