On Wednesday, July 8, I woke up depressed. The previous morning we had sent the newspaper to press with the lead headline on Page A1 鈥淢ildenberger guilty of murder.

My hometown, Vancouver, is in a rainforest, so we celebrate sunny days. People I talk to are enjoying the recent warm, dry weather, but they invariably add, 鈥淭his isn鈥檛 normal鈥� 鈥� especially with all the smoke from nearby forest fires.

Yorkton can be a breeding ground when it comes to rumours, but sometimes when you see smoke there is fire. Of course, there is a lot of smoke and fire in La Ronge and one of the rumours last week concerns that very issue.

The Yorkton Summer Fair was held last week in the city, the usual herald of the arrival of what is summer in this part of the world, July and August. The annual exhibition is a tradition in this city, one stretching back decades.

It was just a little smoke ... or rather, a lot of wood smoke blanketing southern Saskatchewan like about a million camp fires.
