Stackhouse's Soapbox - Trudeau costume fiasco a disaster

I don’t think there’s much point delving into Justin Trudeau’s India disaster. But, the long and the short of it is that he embarrassed many of us by his constant posing for pictures in get-ups that Indian people don’t even wear.

I don’t think there’s much point delving into Justin Trudeau’s India disaster. But, the long and the short of it is that he embarrassed many of us by his constant posing for pictures in get-ups that Indian people don’t even wear. Imagine Donald Trump coming to Canada and dressing up as a Mountie one day, a hockey player the next day, and a lumberjack to cap the weekend. That’s what Trudeau did, essentially, to put it into perspective. He’s a joke. Here’s a bigger joke: Trudeau delivered a public speech and announced Canada is coming off its 100th birthday (it’s actually 150 in case you slept through the last year). Here’s what’s not a joke: Trudeau invited a Sikh extremist to a state supper and there are photos of his phoney wife and a number of other Liberal politicians with this man, who was convicted of attempted murder in British Columbia in 1986. India’s Prime Minister was already giving Trudeau the cold shoulder during his time there anyway because Trudeau has been very soft, publicly, on Sikh extremism. Where have we heard this before? Trudeau soft on terror? The reality is that there is mounting evidence that Trudeau is aligned with these extreme groups and Canadians ought to be very concerned. Yes, there is every reason to suspect Trudeau is just in over his head with this job as Prime Minister and is incompetent.  Sometimes it’s funny and embarrassing, but there is also the reality that it’s very dangerous.  Any time your national leader admires dictators from Cuba and China and has similar affection for ISIS and Sikh extremism, we need to take note and there should be some amount of alarm. I can only hope the Canadians in Quebec and Ontario aren’t as dumb as they were in 2015 and vote in this guy again in 2019.  It’s too bad those two provinces decide for the rest of us. Remember, Canada disliked Stephen Harper because he was viewed as a dictator. Well, he’s got nothing on Trudeau.  The evidence is as plain as the nose on your face.

Consider this as well:  Trudeau is talking tough with Facebook in regards to fake news.  He wants them to take a harder stance on it.  But, what is fake news?  To me, fake news is the suggestion CBC posted with regards to Jaspal Atwal getting his invite to the state supper in India through corrupt operatives in the Indian government. Trudeau’s version of fake news is anything critical of him or his government. Well, that’s not fascist at all, is it? Trudeau did ban a media outlet from his supper due to what he deemed to be negative coverage of his trip to India.

At the Winter Olympics, there was a bit of a controversy on name pronunciation. The Canadian men’s hockey team has three English speaking players from Quebec, who say their last name the English way. For example, Derek Roy says his last name exactly how it reads, as opposed to the French way of Ru-wa. or Wah as some say. The public address announcer in Â鶹ÊÓƵ Korea saw the players were from Quebec, so he used the French method when saying the names. Hockey Canada corrected the announcer, saying that in the case of Derek Roy, the English way is what he goes by. Well, Heritage Minister Melanie Joly has chimed in and is outraged that Hockey Canada and Derek Roy would erase French culture. So, apparently, we’ve reached the point where saying your own name can upset a portion of our population. I guess that means I will now be known as Michel Empiler de Maison.

In my full-time job of selling promotional advertising, we had an inside sales rep pass through the store last week and she announced that prices were going up because the warehouse where everything comes from is in Ontario. She wanted to let me know that Ontario, recently, raised its minimum wage to $14/hour (I knew this) and to make up for the added increase in costs, there would be an across the board increase in products. So, there you have it. Ontario’s ill-advised minimum wage increase will have an effect on those of us right across the country who purchase promotional products.

I was worried we may see an increase the number of cases involving trespassing and guns in rural areas in the wake of Gerald Stanley being found not guilty in relation to the death of Colten Boushie. This weekend, a farmer was taken into custody near Okotoks after he, allegedly, opened fire on two suspects breaking into his car. Meanwhile, in an area north of Saskatoon last week, a farmer was shot at after he shouted out the window at suspects breaking into a shed. This isn’t going away anytime soon.

It should be noted the Stanley verdict isn’t a one of a kind. In New Brunswick, about ten years ago, a man was found not guilty of murder after he woke up in the middle of the night and heard rustling around in his garage. He noticed a strange truck parked in front of the building, so he decided to fire gun shots at it to make it immobile and help police for when they arrived. Turns out, one of his gun shots killed a man inside the vehicle.
He was found not guilty.  The home owner and the would-be criminal breaking into the garage were of the same ethnic background.

Nice people mention this week: Scott and Wendy McOuat, Tim Cameron, Ken McLeod, Tracy Turner, and Sandy Kosteniuk.
