This week we conclude our look back at the biggest local stories from throughout 2017 in Yorkton This Week. 5 – DRACUP What had begun to seem like the ‘never-ending project’ finally saw completion in 2017.

The great outdoors in Yorkton and area has benefitted from the work of the Yellowhead Flyway Birding Trail Association, and one of the central figures has been Rob Wilson.

Since 2007, in celebration of 125 years of Yorkton settlement, and to show readers the importance of archival records in the life of a community and surrounding area, the City of Yorkton Archives presented a column History Corner in this newspaper.

2017 was a hectic year for everybody in Canada. Premier Brad Wall announced his departure from politics, Sears Canada closed its doors, and the federal government weathered accusations of an ethical scandal.

It has been an action packed year in 2017 says Yorkton MLA Greg Ottenbreit. The government had to face down low commodity prices, a tough budget and a change in leadership as Premier Brad Wall stepped down.

Yorkton Mayor Bob Maloney looks back on 2017 as a positive one in terms of business growth in the city. Maloney started with a nod to Save On Foods, which he said was a definite positive as another grocery store in Yorkton.

Yorkton Council proclaimed January as Active Living Month at its regular meeting in December.

As we approach the end of Canada’s 150th year, we also approach the end of the Canada 150 column, our dive into history through our own archives.

The leadership of Saskatchewan’s New Democratic Party is going to be decided in 2018. Trent Wotherspoon wants to be the person to take on the role as leader of the opposition, and then build towards an election win in 2020.
