More than 70 young learners attended an open house Thursday at Parkland College in Yorkton. The event helped students and their families learn more about university classes and degrees available through the College.
Representatives from the University of Regina (U of R) and University of Saskatchewan (U of S) were on hand to answer questions about their respective programs. Parkland College staff provided guidance and offered on-the-spot applications, while student volunteers led visitors on tours of the main campus and shared insight on what it鈥檚 like to take university classes close to home.
Half-hour sessions were scheduled during the open house, allowing visitors to learn about admissions, scholarships, specific areas of study, and even studying abroad. There were also question-and-answer sessions, 鈥淢oney Matters鈥 workshops about student loans and budgets, and sample lectures for prospective students to attend.
Parkland College delivers full degree options including a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the U of S and the U of R鈥檚 Bachelor of Social Work. And a teaching degree is now available in the form of the Bachelor of Indigenous Education from the First Nations University of Canada.
Students interested in another field can take the first year of almost any degree available in Saskatchewan at Parkland College. Taking first-year classes at the College can help learners more easily transition to university workloads and expectations. With smaller class sizes than those found at the universities, students can get to know their instructors and classmates. And many families are able to save money by avoiding the costs associated with relocation and renting in another city.
Application deadlines for the 2017-18 year are quickly approaching. Visit parklandcollege.sk.ca or talk to a Parkland College counsellor to learn more.
