Yorkton鈥檚 Got Talent was a new feature of this year鈥檚 Yorkton Exhibition.
The event, sponsored by Yorkton This Week, saw eight acts take to the Painted Hand Casino Main Stage ranging from rock bands, a show tunes singer and a seven-year-old magician.
The final decision as to who had the greatest talent was left up to an audience vote, which left Katie Morgan of Saltcoats in third, and the band The Wooden Knife (Owen and Rylan Bahrey and Andrew Ross) of Yorkton in second.
Top spot went to the Langenburg rock band The Firm, (Carter and Eric Vosper and Riley Buchberger).
鈥淚t was awesome,鈥 remarked Carter Vosper after being announced the winner.
Carter said the contest was a new experience for them in terms of sheer audience size.
鈥淚t鈥檚 the biggest crowd we鈥檝e ever played in front of,鈥 he said.
Eric Vosper said it was great getting 鈥渁 lot of support鈥 from the big crowd. 鈥溾 It was an awesome experience.鈥
The band performed an old favourite from The Eagles; 鈥楬otel California鈥, a song which clearly resonated with the audience.
Carter Vosper said they put a lot of time into the song.
鈥淎bout two months we鈥檝e been practicing this song for this competition,鈥 he said.
While they kept at it Buchberger said they got the song down 鈥減retty quick鈥 initially, and then it was a case of getting it down pat.
In terms of picking 鈥楬otel California鈥 the three members of The Firm agreed The Eagles are a favourite band, one which is a definite influence on the band鈥檚 music, so it was a natural to select one of their songs.
And once they were into the song on stage last Thursday they thought they had done it well.
鈥淚 felt good about it,鈥 said Eric Vosper.
Buchberger said while they were confident they were going to be satisfied 鈥渨ith whatever happened,鈥 seeing the competition as a positive experience.
鈥淚t is what it is,鈥 agreed Eric Vosper.
Carter Vosper added they were aware the competition was tough.
鈥淲ooden Knife are a great band,鈥 he noted, adding Katie Morgan 鈥渨as also very good.鈥
Carter Vosper said the band has a couple of paying gigs already set up for the summer, and hopefully the Yorkton鈥檚 Got Talent win will open a few more doors to the band moving forward.
