A Yorkton dog is on the mend after suffering a fractured leg due to a gunshot.
Boss, a dog taken in by Guardian Angel Animal Rescue (GAAR), is recovering from surgery to his front left leg. If all goes well, he should be walking normally in five weeks.
For a while, it looked like Boss wouldn鈥檛 keep his leg at all. He was taken in by the Yorkton SPCA in May. They found a hole in his leg that was caused by a bullet. They learned he鈥檇 been wandering around Yorkton for two weeks with the wound.
The SPCA wrapped his leg in a cast three times, but Boss ripped each one off. Boss was transferred to GAAR, a nonprofit which specializes in stray, neglected, and abused animals.
鈥淏oss needed one-on-one care,鈥� says Joan Kobylko, who works at the SPCA.
Carmen Yasinski, who鈥檚 worked at GAAR for four years, knew Boss would lose his leg without surgery. She didn鈥檛 want to amputate the limb, so she posted Boss鈥檚 story online. The public reaction was instant and overwhelming, so Yasinski set up a Go-Fund-Me page, which reached over $3,100 in donations.
Surgeons realigned Boss鈥檚 leg and placed pins above and below the injury to hold the fracture while it heals. His recovery has been steady. Once he鈥檚 ready, he鈥檒l be put for adoption.
People as far as Ontario have shown interest in Boss, but Yasinski hopes to keep him in Yorkton so she can be close if there are any complications.
