Saskatoon Berries pitcher Travis Phelps has signed a professional contract with the Florence Y’alls of the Frontier League.

SASKATOON -- Saskatoon Berries pitcher Travis Phelps didn’t have a long stay with the Western Canadian Baseball League team, but it ended up being a historic one nonetheless.

Phelps became the first Berries player to sign a professional contract on Wednesday, as the Alvin, Texas product is set to join the Florence Y’alls of the Midwest and Atlantic-region based Frontier League.

Phelps, a senior out of Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas, was in his first season in Saskatoon and had seen limited but productive action, pitching five innings and putting up 3.60 earned run average with 1.20 walks and hits per inning pitched and a .211 opposing batting average. He also had six strikeouts and two walks across his four appearances.

Unfortunately for Saskatoon, Phelps will be reporting to Florence immediately, ending his tenure with the Berries.

“We are very excited for Travis,” said Saskatoon head coach Joe Carnahan. “We are grateful to have been part of his path to reaching professional baseball and wish him all the best as he starts his career.”

The Berries are back in action Thursday in Weyburn against the Beavers, with their next home game on Saturday, July 12 against the Swift Current 57’s.
