5th Weyburn Scouts wrap up season with campout and community service

The wind-up camp at Nickle Lake brought together youth, families, and dedicated volunteers for a weekend of learning, camaraderie, and community service.

WEYBURN – The 5th Weyburn Scouts celebrated the end of their season with a wind-up camp at Nickle Lake on June 6-7, bringing together youth, families, and dedicated volunteers for a weekend of learning, camaraderie, and community service.

Families and the youngest members of the group, the Beavers (ages 5-7), joined on Friday evening for a potluck supper and fellowship, while Cubs (8-10), Scouts (11-13), and Venturers (14-17) stayed overnight.

“Not everyone was able to attend, but we still had 12 youth make it,” said Lise Soles, Weyburn Scouting Group Commissioner.

For some, including newer members and younger participants, this was their first camp with the group.

“This was a short camp as we normally camp the whole weekend or longer, but it was a great wind up,” said Soles.

The weekend was packed with skill-building activities, including food preparation, fire safety, shelter setups, and tidiness, all essential elements of Scouting. But beyond the practical lessons, the camp fostered teamwork and camaraderie.

“We had a large variety of ages and not everyone had camped together before, but you'd never know it with how well they all came together,” said Soles.

After packing up camp, the Scouts headed into Weyburn to complete a community service project, planting two sponsored flower planters downtown. One planter, located across from the site of the new theatre, was designed to resemble a campfire ring, while the other, in front of the MNP building across from RBC, featured vibrant, sporadic colours to symbolize the beauty and unpredictability of fire, a nod to the importance of fire safety.

The group’s at Moose Mountain Provincial Park running from June 28 to July 6. The 5th Weyburn Scouts are significant contributors to this national camp, which welcomes youth from across Canada.
