What Mom wants

Mother’s Day is around the corner and though I may be totally and completely biased, I think moms are a great thing to celebrate.

Mother’s Day is around the corner and though I may be totally and completely biased, I think moms are a great thing to celebrate.

I personally find my own mom one of the easiest people to buy for, likely because we share a lot of common interests and both value the love language of gifts. I know though, that not everyone is a natural, thoughtful gift giver, and since gifts are lovely at any celebration, I thought I’d leave a few suggestions here.

Obviously I can’t speak for every mom but I think I’d hit a pretty large cross-section of moms with the following gift ideas.

Photograph: Moms would love a gift certificate for professional family photos (again totally biased here), but would also love any thoughtful picture. Take a photo of each of your kids holding up a sign, saying what they love about mom and either print them or even send them to her phone.

Time alone: Moms love our families, more than anything, but time alone is often a rare commodity. Even rarer is time alone at home. I would totally love the gift of a Saturday morning, by myself, in an already clean house, to drink my coffee while it’s still hot or take on a fun project with my music at maximum volume. If your kids are older and thus rarely ever home because of sports and school, then maybe reverse this gift and all arrange to stay home and linger a little longer together in the morning.

Lessen the Load: Take on a few of mom’s responsibilities. Arranging to have the next few days’ meals worked out through plans to order in, a meal in the freezer or a salad prepped with burgers to throw on the grill (by my husband) would be a huge blessing.

I could go on with great ideas to bless the socks off the moms in your life, but if you really want to go big and give every mom her dream gift, it’s two hours alone in a store with a hot coffee in her cart cup holder. You’re welcome.
