I understand why people are sceptical about churches, preachers and even the Bible. Over the years, many terrible, dishonest and even criminal things have been done in the name of God.聽
If I was not born into a Christian home, I do not know if I would have given Christianity a second thought. Therefore, I do not expect anyone who happens to read this article to take what I say as truth, simply because I said or because I quote some verse from the Bible.
However, if that is where you are coming from, can I make a suggestion? Try it anyway.
When my kids were little, we had a rule about food that stated, 鈥淵ou do not have to like everything, but you have to try it.鈥 Often, the things that the kids thought were terrible soon became some of their favourite meals.
That is my experience with tea. When I was growing up, my mom drank tea all the time. Every once in a while I would try some and I absolutely hated it.
However, over the years, I would visit people who served tea all the time, so I would drink it just to be polite and now I like it a lot.
Romans 12:1-2 says, 鈥淪o here鈥檚 what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday, ordinary life 鈥 your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life 鈥 and place it before God as an offering. Embracing what God does for you is the best thing you can do for him 鈥 Fix your attention on God. You鈥檒l be changed from the inside out. Readily recognize what he wants from you, and quickly respond to it鈥.聽
Do you see what he is saying? He is saying, 鈥淲hy not give Godly things a shot and see if they are not better than what you are doing now?鈥 See if 鈥渢urning the other cheek鈥 actually works. Be generous and see if it makes you happier. Offer forgiveness and see if it is better than carrying a grudge.
You do not have to believe me. You do not even have to believe the Bible. You can put it to the test yourself. Give it is a try. You may be surprised by the results.
As Psalm 34:8 says 鈥淭aste and see that the Lord is God鈥.
