Spoon night

I love a good theme night. I typically find that creating a theme for a date night elevates ordinary things into fun and whimsical things. Themes are quite simple to pull off and I always start with one foundation that I build everything else around.

I typically find that creating a theme for a date night elevates ordinary things into fun and whimsical things. Themes are quite simple to pull off and I always start with one foundation that I build everything else around.

Let’s take, for example, the game of Spoons. Have you played it? It’s a surprisingly intense and rousing card game.

The rules are simple. Place one less spoon than you have players in the middle of the table. Deal four cards to each player. The dealer then takes one card from the main deck and then either keeps it or discards it to the player on their left, everyone else then also either keeps or passes on the card they get.

The person who has the dealer on their left will just put their passed on card into the discard pile and the dealer will take a fresh card each round. You can only ever have four cards in your hand. You continue this process quickly and the first person to have four of a kind quickly grabs a spoon from the middle.

This signals for everyone else to grab a spoon and the person who doesn’t get a spoon is out for the next round. Trust me – it’s fun and competitive. You will likely have scars afterwards.

Building around the game, everything must be spoons. I think spoon desserts would be fun to make. Use a scoop of peanut butter on a spoon, dipped in melted chocolate or any other variation of things on a spoon in chocolate would be fantastic. Or you might have the tortilla chip scoops count as your spoons with salsa. Cookies in the shape of spoons would also be fair game.

With young children you could extend the evening by making wooden spoon puppets and for the older ones, you could create wood burned designs into wooden spoons to add to your kitchen or give as gifts. Then you have a whole night built around the simple card game of Spoons.
