I recently was researching the Brave Writer program for my kids and learned about the developer’s idea to do a weekly Poetry Tea Time.
I loved the idea and decided to tweak it a bit for my own family. We have now instituted a weekly Poetry and Pancakes Luncheon.
Now, if I had told my kids that we were going to do a weekly poetry reading I can tell you honestly that they would not jumping for excitement. But when you put in a little effort to make something charming and special it can give a whole new appeal.
While the kids were playing, I took the time to start the pancakes and set the table. I used fancy dishes, gold cutlery, flowers on the table, folded napkins and my pretty teapot and cute cups. I added a variety of teas to choose from, as well as the option for an instant pumpkin spice latte.
I have lots of great poetry books but chose to print off some Shel Silverstien poems, even though I have his books as well, and placed them on the table. It was a good thing I did as we totally had a latte spill that would’ve ruined my book.
When I called the kids up the table was set, candles lit, poems displayed and food ready. They were instantly excited and eager to act fancy while we had our intellectual discussion about silly poems. They even raised their pinky finger while they drank.
We ate food, drank lattes and tea, and giggled about the poems. After reading a few we decided to mimic Silverstein by creating some silly word combinations and modelling a few of his poems.
It was such a fun time and didn’t feel like education at all. When we set the stage our kids can engage us in different ways. I’m looking forward to all of our poetry and pancake luncheons, the fun we’ll have and the break that they are from the regular routine of our days.
Being intentional to have fun with our families is always a good idea!
