Party games

One of the things I love about technology is that it is compact. The other evening we went out for supper and were all admittedly “hangry” – that is angry because we were so hungry.

The other evening we went out for supper and were all admittedly “hangry” – that is angry because we were so hungry. We thought it would be a good idea to distract ourselves from the hunger and pass some time.

Rather than lugging games to the restaurant and cluttering up our table, I did a quick search on the app store and found a game for us to play as a family. I love that there are so many more options for party-like games on phones and tablets that don’t require you to be glued to your screen, but instead encourage engagement from all family members.

The game we played over supper was Tele-doodle. I was first introduced the physical game at a girls night under the name Telestrations.

If the games Telephone (where you whisper a phrase from person to person in a large group and see if you end up with the same phrase at the end) and Pictionary had a baby, it would be this game.

So in Tele-doodle, you enter in the names of the players (either on the same device or their own) and Player 1 is given a word that they need to draw. They then pass to Player 2, who has to guess what the drawing is in and enter the word. Player 3 then draws Player 2’s guess.

It’s hilarious to see what things end up as and how close you were to the original word.

Heads Up is another fun game that Ellen DeGeneres created. It’s basically the digital version of “Headbandz” where you hold a word up to your forehead and your team has to give clues to get you to guess the word.

You try to go through as many cards as possible in the time limit. I’ve also found the Heads Up Kids version, which uses pictures for those pre readers.

Lastly, remember the Simon Says machine from the 1980’s? You can download Shake Pop and turn your phone into the same thing.
