The NHL held its annual Entry Draft in Buffalo, N.Y. over the weekend. The Toronto Maple Leafs had the No. 1 overall pick and they selected centre Auston Matthews from the U.S. The Winnipeg Jets had the next pick and they chose right-winger Patrik Laine from Finland. The Ottawa Senators had the 11th pick and they selected centre Logan Brown from the Ontario Hockey League’s Windsor Spitfires. Regina Pats’ forward Sam Steel was taken by the Anaheim Ducks in the first round, and centre Adam Brooks was drafted by Toronto in the fourth round.
In Major League Baseball, the Toronto Blue Jays took one of three games from the Chicago White Sox over the weekend. The Jays are in third place in the American League East.
As for the Western Major Baseball League, the Regina Red Sox lost both of their games over the weekend. The Red Sox are in second place in the Eastern Division.
In Major League Soccer, Toronto FC lost to Orlando City FC 3-2 in a close game. Toronto’s record is 5-6-4 and they are in seventh place in the Eastern Conference.
CFL scores from week 1 were: the Hamilton Tiger-Cats beat the Toronto Argonauts 42-20, the Montreal Alouettes defeated the Winnipeg Blue Bombers 22-14, the Ottawa RedBlacks got past the Edmonton Eskimos 45-37 in overtime, and the B.C. Lions edged the Calgary Stampeders 20-18.
In the Arena Football League, the Cleveland Gladiators got past the Jacksonville Sharks 48-47 in a close game. The Gladiators record is 7-6 and their next game is against the Philadelphia Soul.
Other scores from Week 13 were: the L.A. Kiss beat the Arizona Rattlers 64-49 and the Orlando Predators hammered the Tampa Bay Storm 56-33.
