In my ripe old age of 30-something (I鈥檓 not trying to hide my age here, I just legitimately am not sure of what it is), I have become more set in some of my ways than I thought I鈥檇 be.
I was surprised and delighted to find that my son has come to love mustard on his burger. I kind of hate mustard and I thought it was cool that he had a taste that he did not get from me.
He鈥檚 also introduced me to some new music styles that he loves and I鈥檝e had little exposure to. At this point in life I鈥檝e narrowed in on my musical preference, and while I used to believe I had a wide variety of musical interests, in reality I don鈥檛. I pretty much love any song with clapping and 鈥渙h oh oh鈥� the most. They鈥檙e my jam.
It鈥檚 been fun, though, listening to my son鈥檚 favourite music, which I guess I鈥檇 describe as electronica. It made me think that it鈥檇 be fun to set aside some time to explore a more diverse array of musical genres. Thus, my plan for the next few weeks is to have daily Musical Smorgasbord time.
During this time we will listen to at least one song from a specific genre and if possible, have a little dance party to it.
I love music but am not super knowledgeable about all the ins and outs so I鈥檝e started Googling and compiling a list of genres to try. There are many. If you want to join here are a few to get you started: jazz, blues, folk, hip hop, rap, rock, melody, rhythm and blues, punk rock, country, classical, reggae, pop, funk, orchestra, opera, disco, Euro disco, techno, dubstep, electronic dance, gospel, worship, world music and rockabilly.
I鈥檓 excited to try this little experiment. I think the kids will generally love it and I鈥檓 sure good conversations about our likes, dislikes and comparisons will follow.
