Let's help out!

If you follow my column, you will remember that last month I revealed my new-found clutziness (is that even a word?). Well either I have no pull with the city or the property owner doesn't read my column.

If you follow my column, you will remember that last month I revealed my new-found clutziness (is that even a word?). Well either I have no pull with the city or the property owner doesn't read my column. Here we are, a month later and the 'tree' involved has only become more lush and bushier than ever. I now literally have to ride my bike in the traffic lane in order to avoid an ugly incident. I've had to duck for two weeks and now it isn't even safe to duck because you can't get low enough. I've had a few readers say "I can't believe those tree limbs are that bad", so I have attached an up-to-date picture. As you can see my feet are on the ground, so you can image how much of me disappears when I'm actually seated on my bike!

My friend, Sue, walks her dog along this route and will confirm this obstruction (and others along Coteau Avenue), as she too has had to detour around these hanging limbs. Initially people were complaining that the city should be trimming these down but upon further investigation, the tree is not on city property. Should the city enforce the property owner to have this trimmed back? I'm not sure the chain of command, but maybe it will take some sort of unhappy motorist getting his car scratched or another clutzy bicyclist getting dumped before something is done. Let's hope not.

Moving along, I'd like to bring some awareness to another Weyburn hometown hero. We all know how much Graham DeLaet has brought awareness to our city. Even if you don't follow golf, you are aware of his PGA status and his recent fundraising efforts for the Weyburn and District Hospital Foundation. Let's not forget Brendon Labatte. This 'kid' (I can say that because he's around my son's age and I'm getting old) has risen to the top of the CFL as a premier Canadian offensive left guard. Yes our little 'Bammer' (as he was known) is now a father and a respected player in this league. Not an import, but Canadian, hometown talent. He too has not forgot where his hometown digs are. Brendon has taken Weyburn Minor Football under his wing and is helping support this important organization, where he first started. He recently donated a 'Labor Day' football package with all proceeds going to Weyburn Minor Football.

Barber Motors has supplied Brendon with a vehicle to get him back and forth to Regina and bring awareness to the pride we have in this Weyburnite. Once again Brendon has not disappointed his followers and will be appearing at Barber Motors for a fundraiser for Weyburn Minor Football on Saturday, September 22. If you have not met this down-to-earth, teddy bear of a man (and even if you have), don't miss out! You will not be sorry and you'll be helping out a great cause. Come on Weyburn, let's show our support for this hometown hero and the cause he's so passionate about. These two athletes have helped put Weyburn back on the map and have given Weyburn and surrounding area future stars someone to look up to and idolize. Kudos to these two young men for not forgetting their roots.

Maxine's saying: My Motto is: Live your life in such a way that when your feet hit the floor in the morning....Satan shudders and says, "Oh s#@t, she's awake". (excuse the language, but you get the point, ha, ha).

Pet peeve of the week: When a dog owner allows his dog to move freely in the box of his truck. That can't be good for them when they are continuously being tossed across and slammed into the front when the owner puts on his brakes or turns a corner. People aren't allowed back there, why are pets? That's just me. Let me know what you think.

ATTENTION: HARVEST HOMEMAKERS. A reader (Kim) suggested that I ask the women involved in harvest season to send in the "DOs" & "DON'Ts of harvest. Her first submission is 1) Don't get out of bed in the morning. Ha, ha....good one. Submit your suggestion to [email protected], attention: Andrea. You can remain anonymous if you like.
