Learning skills

There’s a transition that takes place where we need to β€œre-learn” what we do indoors and how to keep ourselves occupied. After cancelling our cable for the summer (because we’re never indoors enough to watch T.V.), our goal has been to keep it cancelled and spend our time on other things.

I’ve recently come across the website Skillshare. It’s an online community where you can take video classes to learn new skills. Since we’ll be indoors a lot anyways we may as well pick up some new hobbies.

I spend a lot of time teaching my kids but I think it would be fun to learn with them in a new way as well. My idea is that it would be a fun experiment to try a once a week family class.

Skillshare has a wide range of categories you can choose from, including design, photography, business, film, technology, gaming, fashion, music, culinary, writing, crafts and lifestyle. Set up a schedule and either vote as a family on what type of class to tackle or take turns letting each family member choose a class to work through.

They may choose something you’re not super interested in, but giving it a chance might surprise you. And if not, you still honoured their interests, which is still a win.

I’ve just started my subscription but already have a dozen or more classes saved and in my queue. Things that have caught my eye so far are The Art of Doodling, Basics of Hand Lettering, Creating Cuter Cartoon Characters, Creating a Modern Logo and Make Ahead Breakfasts That Will Change Your Life.

There are seriously so many options it’ll be hard to narrow it down. There are also many geared towards kids that would be great for younger ages.

How fun would it be to take a class on logo design and create a family logo? Or to tackle learning iPhone photography alongside your teen, and building a stellar family Instagram account? Family class is in session.
