Reed Carruthers and his team won the inaugural Humpty’s Players Championship 4-3 in a double extra end over John Empping in the men’s final. Carruthers finished the round robin with a 3-1 record; he beat Kevin Koe in the second qualifier and he beat Mike McEwen in the semifinals. In the women’s final, Jennifer Jones beat Rachel Homan 7-5.
In the American Hockey League, the Ontario Reign beat the San Jose Barracuda 4-1 in Game 4 to take the best-of-five series three games to one. The Reign will now face the San Diego Gulls in the second round of the playoffs.
The Los Angeles Clippers season is over in the NBA, after losing to the Portland Trail Blazers 106-103 in Game 6 of the first round of the playoffs.
In Major League Soccer, Toronto FC lost to the Portland Timbers 2-1 in a close game. Toronto’s record is 3-3-2 and they will come home for four games, starting with FC Dallas.
The Minnesota Twins were swept by the Detroit Tigers over the weekend in Major League Baseball action. The Twins are in last place in their division.
In NCAA Baseball, the No. 1 Florida Gators swept two games over the Â鶹ÊÓƵ Carolina Gamecocks over the weekend. The third game was cancelled due to weather.
In the Arena Football League, the Arizona Rattlers hammered the Portland Steel 68-21 in a one-sided game. Arizona’s record is 5-0 and their next game is against the Orlando Predators.
Other scores from week 5 were: the Predators beat the Cleveland Gladiators 76-56, and the Jacksonville Sharks beat the Tampa Bay Storm 33-27.
