It’s clear to see in the majority of my columns that I am a game enthusiast. I love games. I love friendly competition.
My husband and I literally jump and cheer when we meet someone in our city that we find out loves to play Settlers of Catan; the joy is real. I have fond memories of childhood games and Hungry Hungry Hippos was a good one.
Who doesn’t want to pound a lever on a hippo and make it eat gobs of little plastic balls? It should be noted that I have a straight up gift for pushing levers or buttons insanely fast. My husband will vouch for me.
Popping bubbles games on the phone? They can’t even keep up with my lightning fast punching.
I’ve seen the idea floating around Pinterest for Human Hungry Hippos and I knew I had to write about it. So be clear… the idea is not my own.
As for materials, you’re going to need two to four scooter boards, like the four-wheeled square ones from gym class), two to four plastic bins that measure two feet by two feet, and a whack of small balls from a ball pit.
We obviously don’t all have access to gym equipment so I’m thinking that we could rig up something similar using skate boards or just throwing some castor wheels on square boards.
Each team will consist of two people. One person lays on the scooter holding the bin open side down, and one person stands and holds the laying person’s feet. Throw all the balls in a pile in the middle and yell go.
The standing member must push their partner to the middle and that partner gets one chance to put their bin down, trapping as many balls as possible. They keep the bin down, dragging their balls back to their starting position. The team with the most balls once all the balls are captured is obviously the winner.
I can imagine that this version of the game would not only be fun but be absolutely hilarious as well.
