To run for Estevan city council and mayor is indeed a service to the community, as there are lots of headaches for little money.
Someone said to me once, 鈥淚f you don鈥檛 like the way things are run, then run for office yourself.鈥 Unfortunately, I don鈥檛 have the education to do it. That鈥檚 why I vote for people with business backgrounds to look after the interests of Estevan residents, but sometimes business sense and common sense don鈥檛 jive.
I鈥檓 sure that Estevan city council and the Saskatchewan Party aren鈥檛 purposely trying to drive seniors from their homes and into apartments or nursing homes. (By the way, to Estevan MLA Lori Carr, the nursing home is another story). Every dollar that our taxes and utility rates go up is a dollar that a senior doesn鈥檛 have to use to improve their homes, buy insurance, drive a car and most importantly, buy medications.
So please, politicians of all stripes, the next budget you pass, would you consider the cost to not only the seniors but all Estevan residents, who I鈥檓 sure are just as upset over these tax and utility increases as I am.
Meanwhile, I鈥檒l be at city hall next week to pay another $3,900 in taxes.
