The Saskatchewan Green Party is pleased the Wall Government used participatory democracy to get feedback on farmland ownership rules.Ìý
Farmland ownership consultations by the Ministry of Agriculture resulted in 3,200 responses this year. Sixty-nine per cent of respondents said they oppose foreign financing of Saskatchewan farmland, while 75 per cent oppose pension plans buying the land.Ìý
The government did a great job of finding out what Saskatchewan people think of foreign ownership of our farmland, and now it’s time for Agriculture Minister Lyle Stewart to act accordingly.Ìý
Participatory democracy is not about talking in a vacuum. The minister has a clear mandate from the people to end foreign ownership of Saskatchewan farmland and he should do it now. The fall sitting of the Saskatchewan Legislature is a perfect opportunity for the Wall Government to table a bill ending foreign ownership of our farmland.Ìý
It’s time to return power to the people of Saskatchewan.
