“…Brown paper packages tied up with strings… these are a few of my favourite things!”
Coincidentally enough, just like Julie Andrews, I really do love brown paper packages tied up with string, preferably red and white bakers twine!
We all have our favourite things. Things that we love over and over, and that don’t get old. The things that make us do a little happy dance for and the things that refresh us.
I think it would be fun to plan a Family Favourites Day where everyone gets to have part of the day geared towards their favourite thing.
First off I would divide the day up into categories. These might include food, activity, drink, game and movie. Write each category on a slip of paper – for simplicity you may want to match the number of categories to the number of people in your family.
If you’re doing a date night, there could be two categories for each of you. Next, each person draws a slip of paper from a hat and then they get to choose their favourite thing in that category for the family to indulge or participate in.
For example, if I drew food I might take us all out for Peanut Buster Parfaits or cheesecake. My choice for a game would definitely be Settlers of Catan or Ticket to Ride. If the tall one or the boy one drew the movie category I can bet you a million dollars that we’d be watching one of the Star Wars films. (I just asked him – it’d be Empire Strikes Back.)
If the girl one drew activity, I’m pretty sure we’d be playing Cats with stuffed cats. Would it be wrong for me to just assign categories?
I feel like Family Favourites could turn into a really unique and fun day. Typically when we are discussing or deciding on family activities, we are putting forth suggestions that we know have a likelihood of being selected based on a mass appeal.
Getting to choose your absolute favourite would be a special treat. It also keeps everyone happy because everything gets to make a major decision.
