The Editor:
In the June 1 edition of the Estevan Mercury our city manager Jeff Ward takes the position that our taxes have to go up every year.
I agree with that.
What I don’t agree with is our taxes and utility rates having both gone up 10 per cent every year except for this year when taxes went up five per cent but water consumption fees went up 10 per cent.
I’ve worked for over 40 years and never once did I see a 10 per cent raise in one year.
I would like to retire with dignity in my own home, but on a fixed pension, I don’t know if I can.
I would ask that anyone seeking the mayor’s seat or a councillor’s position be honest about their intentions regarding taxes and utility rates in the future.
We deserve to know before we vote.
