I鈥檓 a sucker for awards shows, which may make me a bit strange (I was just called that the other day by a colleague), but I enjoy the spectacle, the jokes, and in the case of the Grammy Awards, the performances.

I saw a question posed on Facebook where a person asked what is happening with the Grammys, because the person thought some of the music was not all that great.

To me, the Grammy Awards are all about the music, so the performances are what I enjoy seeing, especially when there鈥檚 an artist I don鈥檛 know all that well.

This is an opportunity to see and hear someone new (or new to me) and expand my horizon musically. Not all the performances were good (like Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani), but this is the case no matter which awards show you see.

They had Aerosmith reunited with Run-DMC to do 鈥淲alk This Way鈥�, which was all right, although not as good as the music video they did of that song 鈥渂ack in the day鈥�.

The hostess, Alicia Keys, was really good and positive, and she sang a nice song, as did Camila Cabello, a Cuban-American beauty who sang a really nice tribute to her dad, who happened to be sitting in the front row.

I could just imagine all the social media comments ripping Camila for that song, but as a dad of three daughters, I admit I had tears of my own to see her sweetly sing about her father.

Like I said, I鈥檓 a sucker for awards shows.

Going back a couple of weeks, I watched the Golden Globes, and had to chuckle over the rather brazen no-holds-barred comments of the host, Ricky Gervais, who rightly skewered the TV and movie stars sitting there waiting to win awards.

Some of the comments can鈥檛 be repeated here, but let me just say 鈥淩ight on!鈥� to a lot of what he said in pointing out the hypocrisy of some of those celebrities.

One of the things I don鈥檛 really enjoy about the awards shows are the political comments that have nothing whatsoever to do with the awards that a given celebrity is winning an award for.

I had to hand it to Robert De Niro, though, who won a lifetime achievement award from the Screen Actors Guild for his work (very deservedly so) and unapologetically said he knows he鈥檚 taking advantage of his position as the one being honoured to make a statement or three of a political nature. The Oscars are coming up next, which I will be watching, and hopefully there won鈥檛 be too many political statements.
