Last week, when driving down the road next to Estevan Comprehensive School and Spruce Ridge School, I noticed in Torgeson Park there was a newly set up, permanent, disc golf (or Frisbee golf) course.

Upon closer inspection we saw that the Estevan Lions Club was responsible for setting up the course; thank you Lions Club. The tall one and I made plans to play that evening and we were so impressed with the course (the only course we’ve ever played on mind you).

I am so thankful for the groups and citizens that invest in our community and provide great things for families to enjoy.

If you’ve never played disc golf, the premise is simple and pretty much exactly like regular golf. You start from the tee and throw your Frisbee. From there, you play from wherever it lands and finally need to throw it into the cage at the end of the hole. Each throw counts as a stroke and the player with the fewest throws at the end of the game wins.

I did a little digging to investigate some other disc golf variations that you can try out at the course this summer

Bingo bango bongo: Instead of counting strokes there are three points awarded on each hole. A bingo point is for the longest drive, a bango point is for the closest to the hole on the second toss, and a bongo point is for the first person finished.

String Golf: Each player gets a predetermined length of string. Throughout the game they can use portions of the length to move their disc and make up ground, or get a missed put in the hole.

Snake: Start the game with a snake or other token and establish the rules for acquiring the snake. They should be for bad actions like hitting a tree, making bogey, taking three putts, etc. If a player does one of these things, they get the snake. It continues to get passed around and the player who has it at the end of the game loses a bet and must compensate the other players.
