RCMP in Saskatchewan were advising motorists about stormy weather in the western and northwestern parts of the province at 6:45 on Saturday, February 29. The windy conditions were directly affecting road travel in certain areas near the Albertan border on Saturday evening.Â
In the Maidstone area, RCMP were answering to multiple motor vehicle incidents since late Saturday afternoon, including collisions and vehicles trapped in ditches. Officers reporting blizzard-like conditions had reduced the road visibility to zero for motorists. Icy roads and blowing snow were creating havoc for drivers in the west and northwest areas of the province.
Similar wintry circumstances were being reported by the RCMP stationed in the Leader and Maple Creek areas.
The Highway Hotline had shown the weather system had moved east from Alberta then travelled north into Meadow Lake, North Battleford, Glaslyn, Turtleford and St. Walburg. The RCMP were not recommending travel within those areas of the province on Saturday night.
Although roads in the Assiniboia remained passable throughout the weekend, the wind speed had increased from 17-19 kilometres on Saturday evening to a height of 57.78 kilometres on early Sunday morning. The gusts transferred from a southwest to a northwest direction since Saturday, with windchills cooling the entire south central region, also bringing periods of light snow. Real temperatures on Sunday morning hopped between -1 to -8 C, yet the regional windchills had cooled the outdoor weather to lows of -18.  Â
