With community transmission now confirmed in Saskatchewan, NDP Leader Ryan Meili is calling on the province to put an immediate moratorium on evictions in Saskatchewan to ensure no one loses their home. 聽
鈥淣o one should lose their home because of COVID-19 - full stop,鈥� said Meili. 鈥淧eople are stressed, people are scared and everyone needs to be staying at home as much as they possibly can. If we're asking people to stay home, they need to have a home. I鈥檓 calling on the premier today to make that commitment.鈥�
In addition to a ban on evictions, the Saskatchewan NDP urged the Minister of Social Services to quickly develop and implement a plan to assist low-income, vulnerable and people experiencing homelessness, including providing safe housing for people accessing shelters. 聽
鈥淲e know other provinces have already taken steps to protect people from evictions鈥� said NDP Social Services critic Nicole Rancourt. 鈥淎t this time, we need to do everything in our power to ensure people do not become homeless as a result of COVID-19 and provide additional funding to ensure we can provide safe services to those who are struggling.鈥�
