COVID-19 update: nine new cases, 17 more recoveries, seven in hospital

Saskatchewan had seven new confirmed cases and two new presumptive cases of COVID-19, bringing the total to 298 reported cases as of Sunday, April 12. The presumptive positives were due to more testing machines being added in Saskatchewan.

A new machine to test for COVID-19 was online at the Roy Romanow Provincial Laboratory (RRPL). The first 10 positive specimens identified by the new machine were considered presumptive positives and required confirmation using RRPL’s existing machine. 

In addition, Meadow Lake started testing and those cases were considered presumptive positives until confirmed by the RRPL. Of the total number of reported cases, 130 cases were considered active. Seventeen more people have recovered, bringing the provincial total to 164 recoveries. 

There were seven people in hospital in the province receiving inpatient care on Sunday. No one was in intensive care in Saskatchewan because a coronavirus infection over the weekend. So far, four deaths related to COVID-19 have been reported to date in the province.

Based on case reports received on April 12, there were 1,630 hospitalized cases across the country with 449 patients in intensive care. In Canada, 674 had died of COVID-19 as of April 12. In a disease origin breakdown, 73 per cent of COVID-19 cases in the country were related to community transmission, while 27 per cent of all cases came from either being exposed while travelling, or they were exposed to a traveller entering Canada.

Quebec had the largest amount of COVID-19 infections on April 12, with a total of 12,292 cases reported. Ontario had the second highest number of cases in Canada at 7,049. There were no COVID-19 cases reported in Nunavut as of Sunday, April 12.
