Brokenshell Parks and Rec opens new park, has family fun day

A family fun day was held in Trossachs to open a new park

A park with play equipment was opened on Saturday in Trossachs, a long-time project of the Brokenshell Parks and Rec committee, with a family fun day held to celebrate the occasion.

Prior to the park opening, the only point of interest was a cairn to mark Trossachs as the boyhood home of Gerald Bouey, a former Governor of the Bank of Canada. He was born on a farm at Axford in 1920 and grew up in Trossachs as his father ran a grain elevator there.

He was Governor of the Bank of Canada from 1973 to 1987, and his signature was on all of the paper currency for Canada.

Residents of the hamlet and area wanted to establish a playground in the park, and the opportunity came up to buy the playground equipment which had formerly been at the Trossachs School, but in more recent years was at the local berry farm.

The berry farm owner offered the parks and rec committee the equipment, along with some picnic tables, and the committee went ahead and procured it and fixed the equipment up, explained Lana Szabo-Cleveland, president of the committee.

The equipment includes a combination slide and swing set, and a small climbing wall with ropes.

The committee organized a family fun day on Saturday to commemorate the official opening of the park, located near the Gerald Bouey cairn.

The day included children’s activities and games, music, face-painting, and a supper was put on in the evening.
