Rotary members had the opportunity to tour two vehicles of the Care-A-Van Society during their lunch meeting on Thursday.

Kerry Dolter, representative of the Care-A-Van Society spoke about what the organization does and how they help the community. He also mentioned the different organizations that support the Care-A-Van Society.

Currently, the Care-A-Van Society has two handicap accessible vehicles, a bus and a mini van. The bus is available during the weekdays and can hold three wheelchairs and up to five people. The mini-van is only available for rent, is has a capacity of two wheelchairs.

Special appointments can be made for both vehicles, by contacting the Weyburn Special Care Home.
Prior to the purchase of the new mini-van, the Care-A-Van Society had a van that had a capacity of three wheelchairs. "It was getting a little too long in the tooth," said Dolter, noting the frequent needs for maintenance.

Dolter promoted the convenience of the mini van for families who want to go to events and require a handicap accessible vehicle. "It is very easy to drive and easy to handle. We are very cost competitive for residents needing a vehicle."

Residents can contact the Weyburn Special Care Home to book times for either the bus or the mini-van. There is a driver provided, and the main driver for the Care-A-Van Society is Sandra Montgomery.

"A lot of other drivers have a two-step rule, where two steps out of the vehicle the client is on their own.

But Sandra goes above and beyond to help our clients," said Dolter.

The Care-A-Van Society provides transportation for disabled persons in Weyburn and the surrounding area.

Formed in 1982, the Care-A-Van Society receives funding from provincial grants based on the number of rides they provide. They are also a member of the Weyburn and District United Way, and receive donations from organizations like the Rotary Club, Quota Club and the Weyburn Young Fellows.
