ESTEVAN — A woman who was charged in connection with a vehicle arson outside of Estevan earlier this year had her first appearance in Estevan Provincial Court on June 9.

Brittany Elaine Samson of Glen Ewen is charged with one count each of arson for a fraudulent purpose, fraud over $5,000 and public mischief.

Her matter was adjourned to June 30.

Background: According to a news release, the Carnduff RCMP received a report of a stolen vehicle on April 20. Later that day, the detachment was notified of a vehicle on fire northeast of Outram. An investigation determined it was the same vehicle.

The RCMP says further investigation determined the vehicle had not been stolen and the initial report to police was false. According to the RCMP, the vehicle fire was determined to be suspicious in nature.

The Carnduff RCMP arrested Samson on April 25.

The RCMP said at the time investigators believe there might be another individual or individuals involved.

Also on June 9, Estevan Police Service Const. Vaughn Golden made his latest appearance on his charges, which include assault, uttering threats, mischief under $5,000 and violating his release conditions.

The matter was adjourned to July 7 to allow for further resolution discussions between the two parties.

Background: The provincial Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT) announced in late 2024 it had laid charges against a member of the EPS, after the municipal policing agency notified SIRT of an allegation of interpersonal violence involving the member. Golden was arrested by SIRT investigators.

He was released with several conditions, including a no-contact order, and placed on non-uniform, administrative duties by the EPS.

On Dec. 22, the EPS notified SIRT that Golden was believed to have had contact with one of the individuals despite the release order. Following a review of the evidence gathered by both the EPS and SIRT, it was determined that reasonable grounds existed to believe Golden had committed a Criminal Code offence.

His case has been before the courts several times this year.

Golden has been relieved of his duties and is on paid leave under the Police Act.

Charges have not been proven in court.
