ESTEVAN — A Quebec man pleaded guilty May 5 in Estevan Provincial Court to three counts of illegal hunting under the Wildlife Act.

Defence attorney Megan Ward entered the plea on behalf of Douglas Thibault-Mathias, age 37, for shooting a moose bull, cow and calf late last year near Lampman. He was assessed total fines of $3,000, along with a $1,200 victim surcharge, and prohibited from getting a hunting licence for a year.

The sentence came following a joint submission from the defence and Crown.

Charges against two other people were withdrawn.

Ward pointed out statements were taken from the individuals at the scene. Thibault-Mathias was determined to be the one who shot the animals, and confessed to the crime to conservation officers.

Judge Mitch Miller said it's "very concerning" the three animals were shot by someone without a licence.
