Individual charged in Aug 2024 drug bust arrested for drug possession

ESTEVAN — One of the four people charged following a large drug bust in Estevan last August has been arrested and is being held in custody.

According to information from the Estevan Police Service, Devon William Martell was arrested July 6 for possession of methamphetamine under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, and violating the terms of his release conditions under the Criminal Code.

He appeared in Estevan Provincial Court on July 7 and was remanded into custody to be back in court the following day in Weyburn. The Crown said it is opposed to his release and will apply to revoke his bail.

Martell is also scheduled to have a preliminary hearing on Aug. 25 and 26 in Estevan Provincial Court to determine if there is enough evidence for his matters from August 2024 to go to trial.

Background: Martell arrested Aug. 9, 2024, after search warrants were executed at five locations in Estevan. He was one of four charged with possession of a schedule 1 substance for the purpose of trafficking (cocaine); possession of a schedule 1 substance for the purpose of trafficking (methamphetamine); trafficking a schedule 1 substance (cocaine); trafficking a schedule 1 substance (methamphetamine); and possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000.

The Estevan Police Service said it seized one kilogram of cocaine, 50 grams of methamphetamine, two rifles, a Ford F150 that the EPS said is offence-related property, and approximately $8,000 in Canadian currency. The street value of the drugs recovered, according to the EPS, was $150,000.

One of the accused in the matter, Brennan Stephen McKeen, pleaded guilty to one count each of possession for the purpose of trafficking cocaine and methamphetamine. Other charges were stayed, including one count each of trafficking in cocaine and methamphetamine, possession of property obtained by crime exceeding $5,000, and violating the terms of his release order

He is scheduled to be sentenced Sept. 8 in Estevan.

Charges have been stayed against another person charged in the case.
