ESTEVAN — The City of Estevan is expressing its excitement for a June 18 announcement regarding the future of coal-fired power generation.
The Government of Saskatchewan revealed in a letter to SaskPower employees in the Estevan and Coronach areas that it was going to proceed with extending the life of the coal-fired units at the Boundary Dam, Shand and Poplar River power stations, although it didn't state how it would be done or include other specific details.
In a letter sent to Â鶹ÊÓƵ, Estevan Mayor Tony Sernick expressed his "full support" for the commitment to extend the life of Saskatchewan's coal-fired power units.
"This is a generational decision that is a critical step towards protecting our province's energy security and economic stability. The leadership shown in standing up for Saskatchewan's interests and advocating for energy sovereignty is both necessary and appreciated," Sernick wrote.
Coal generation has long been a cornerstone of Saskatchewan's power supply due to its reliability and affordability, he said, and communities like Estevan and Coronach have built their livelihoods around the coal industry. Sernick believes its continued operation ensures these communities with economic activity to grow and provide the people of Saskatchewan with energy.
Sernick ended by thanking everyone involved for defending the importance of coal in the energy mix and investing in solutions that work for the province.
