ESTEVAN — The Estevan Fire Rescue Service (EFRS) had an active week with seven calls from June 16-23, highlighted by three calls in a day June 19.

The EFRS was called to a residential fire alarm in northwest Estevan on June 16. Fire Chief Rick Davies said crews responded, investigated and quickly determined an emergency wasn't occurring. The alarm was due to construction work happening at the site.

The following day, the department responded to an assist call from Estevan Emergency Medical Services. Crews responded and provided help.

As for June 19, the first call came in at 8:15 a.m. Members were dispatched to a commercial fire alarm in northwest Estevan. They were quickly notified the alarm was due to construction work at the site and their assistance was not required.

At 11 a.m., they were requested to be at a property in central Estevan for a service investigation of possible gas in a building. Duty officers responded and investigated with gas-detection equipment.

"Fortunately, nothing was found, so the building was going to be further inspected by the owners and occupants," Davies said.

Then at 5:50 p.m., they were dispatched to a residential fire alarm in north-central Estevan. While responding, the EFRS was notified the alarm was cooking-related, and their assistance was not required.

Then on June 20, they were called to a residential fire alarm in the northeast area. They responded and deemed the alarm was due to cooking, and their assistance was not needed.

Finally, the EFRS was called to a hazardous materials investigation in northeast Estevan on June 21. Crews responded and located a small container of chemical.

"They confirmed the chemical was still sealed and there was no spill. The crews secured and removed the container without incident, and Estevan fire was to confirm the chemical and properly dispose of it."

Firefighters were also busy last week with more school tours of the fire hall, and they'll spray down children at school track-and-field events this week.
