WEYBURN — Twenty-eight of the Â鶹ÊÓƵ East Cornerstone Public School Division’s 35 school facilities participated in Terry Fox fundraising runs, walks and events last year.
The Terry Fox Foundation let Cornerstone board members know that 2024 was a banner year for fundraising in the name of the young man, who is regarded as a national hero and symbol in the pursuit of cancer cures.
Deanna Holowachuk, manager of school runs for the foundation, said schools across the country raised close to $14 million for cancer research.
“Cornerstone showed great strength in numbers and leadership by raising $52,079.61,” she noted in a letter to Cornerstone chairwoman Audrey Trombley, who shared the information with the board members during their May 28 open business meeting in Weyburn.
Holowachuk also said 2024 was the first year the foundation had surpassed registering 10,000 schools across the country.
This year’s run and events are slated for September 25 (or alternate date if necessary) and will signal the 45th anniversary of Fox's Marathon of Hope.
In her letter, Holowachuk noted that three schools in the SECPSD had achieved Top Fundraising status in Saskatchewan in 2024: the Carnduff Education Complex ($10,826.80), Carlyle Elementary School ($6,165.75) and Arcola School ($5,350).
“Terry Fox started a marathon against cancer. Together we can finish it,” Holowachuk said in closing her letter.
