SASKATOON — Saskatoon Public Schools hosted a sod turning ceremony on June 23 to mark the start of construction on the . Special guests and dignitaries included the Hon. Everett Hindley (Education), the Hon. Ken Cheveldayoff (Minister of Advanced Education), Kim Stranden (board chair) and Vernon Linklater (Ward 2 Trustee). Representatives of the Saskatoon Tribal Council, CUMFI, Gabriel Dumont Métis Local 11 and other partners were also in attendance.

“This school infrastructure project is a testament to our government’s commitment to providing safe and supportive learning environments for our province’s students,” says Hindley. “The new school will provide high-quality education spaces that serve the needs of students and families for years to come.”

“This is an exciting and significant milestone in realizing this long-awaited and much-needed school,” says Stranden. “This school will be the innovative facility that area students deserve.”

“I hear often from city centre families who are excited about this school and the opportunity to have a brand new space to learn,” says Linklater. “Students in the core area don’t often get the shiny new thing; this time it’s their turn.”

In March 2020, the provincial government committed to fund a new, centrally located K-Grade 8 school to serve the communities of King George, Pleasant Hill and Riversdale. The King George School, which currently serves these communities, requires cost-prohibitive renovations that necessitate its closure.

The new city centre school will have capacity for 400 students, with an anticipated initial enrolment of 350 students. Additionally, the facility will include 74 new childcare spaces.

Construction is expected to get underway this summer, and the target is to open in fall 2027.
