Photos: Estimated crowd of 52K celebrates Canada Day at River Landing

More than 50,000 people gathered at River Landing in Saskatoon on July 1 to mark Canada Day with music, food, fun and fireworks.

SASKATOON — An estimated crowd of close to 52,000 joined the Canada Day celebration at River Landing on July 1. The day ended with brightly coloured fireworks lighting up the night sky.

Festivities began at 11 a.m., with local food trucks and businesses opening up shops to sell their merchandise. Kids could enjoy activities at the nearby spray park and playground.

Children lined up at the face-painting booth, while others rode a mini train or tried the giant slide set up in front of the Remai Modern.

It was a day to celebrate the 158th anniversary of Canada’s Confederation, with people dressed in colours showcasing the country’s flag and Canadian symbols.

By noon, more than 5,000 people had already set up on the grass or tree shade to enjoy the food and treats they brought.

The highlight of the day was the fireworks show, which organizers had to relocate to Rotary Park due to repairs on the Broadway Bridge.

The packed crowd watched the nearly 30-minute fireworks display from River Landing, Friendship Park and the Traffic Bridge.

Saskatoon Fireworks Festival Inc. president Shad Ali thanked everyone who joined the celebration, as well as those who helped plan and organize the event to make it a success.
