REGINA – A 30-year-old woman and a 28-year-old man are facing several charges after police discovered them unconscious in a vehicle early Sunday morning, leading to a seizure of sawed-off rifle.

Regina Police Service says that around 2:15 a.m. on June 15 officers responded in the 1100 block of Broadway Ave., to reports of two unresponsive individuals inside a parked vehicle. When officers arrived, they confirmed both occupants were unconscious.

While officers were there, the driver, later identified as Darian Bird, regained consciousness and got out of the vehicle. Police then spotted a canister of bear spray inside the car, prompting further investigation.

Both Bird, and his passenger, Alyssa Okeeweehow, were taken into custody without incident.

A search of the vehicle uncovered a loaded sawed-off rifle, ammunition, a knife and drug paraphernalia.

Bird and Okeeweehow were charged with possession of a prohibited or restricted firearm with ammunition, unauthorized possession of a firearm in a vehicle, carrying a concealed or prohibited device or ammunition, and careless storage of a firearm. Bird was additionally charged with failure or refusal to comply with a demand, driving while prohibited, and possession of a firearm or ammunition contrary to a prohibition order.

The accused made their first appearance in Regina Provincial Court on June 16.
