REGINA — The City of Regina has begun its second year of a multi-year project to reduce sewer backups and support the growth of Regina’s population by expanding the wastewater network.

In a media release, the city said this project will help prevent sewer backups in southwest Regina while reducing wastewater bypass events during rainy conditions.

This year's work includes installing a large diameter pipe from A.E. Wilson Park, starting near Wascana Creek and continuing south through Kent Street. The pipe will continue by crossing Dewdney Avenue and into the Government of Canada lands.

The work will require road restrictions along Kent Street from the cul-de-sac south of AE Wilson Park to Dewdney Avenue.

The city will coordinate additional underground and surface upgrades along Kent Street to avoid further disruptive construction.

Regina also said the majority of the additional work is expected to be finished in 2025, with surface restoration work and landscaping being completed in 2026.

This work includes “installing new pipes to replace water mains, replacing storm drains, and relocating SaskPower infrastructure and upgrading the streetscape with new pavement, curbs and gutters.”

Meanwhile, the first phase of contract 2 construction has already begun. The city said phase 1 is expected to finish by Friday.

The work will see parking lane restrictions North of 8th Avenue on Kent Street.

On Friday, Kent Street will be closed from the 8th Avenue intersection to the park entrance until August.

Anyone driving eastbound will need to take Dewdney Avenue to access roads west of Kent Street during the closure.

The city is encouraging residents for the latest information on the project.
